With Colourless Demon Souls in hand, you can upgrade the unique weapons you find up to +5. These weapons all have various beneficial effects so they can be worth the time and effort. The first time you won’t kill them all, so try to kill as many as you can. As the story progresses, you will unlock area spells that will allow you to kill all the lizards at once. However, beware of the two Red Phantoms, who are very strong in groups. It’s best to provoke one, kill him quickly, and then take care of the next.

Sometimes the graphical fidelity — high-resolution textures, mood-setting lighting and shadows, impressive weather effects — creates a dissonance with game mechanics imported wholesale from 11 years ago. Backstabbing is a powerful attack, and since the AI in Demon’s Souls isn’t too bright, it can be easy to get behind an enemy and shank it from the back. I try to line up my weapon hand, not my character, behind a foe to perform a backstab, but the positioning can be tricky to nail. Experiment with parrying early on, and you’ll develop a sense for it. First of all, if this is your first play through of Demon’s Souls, don’t be surprised if the first big boss you encounter, the Vanguard Demon, one-hit kills you.
